Death Side Interview MRR

"Death Side is the greatest hardcore punk band in Japan. They prefer to remain enigmas, hardly ever consenti ng to do interviews. Yet their popularity has grown tremendously in Japan over time. For the past ten years the four members of Death Side have been converting 100 energy into a pure hardcore explosion while continually adding to their music, mutating and progressing into a beast of their own. This individuality is clearly heard on their albums and singles, which have been released in the Untied States as well as Japan. Still, they remain unknown outside Japan, a mere mystery to the rest of the modern world. What is going on inside the minds of the members of this unknown phenomenon?

Interview by Tadashi Satoh, translated by Junko Hiratani.

MRR: When did Death Side form?
Chelsea (guitar): Around '84
Ishiya (vocal): '83 or '84

MRR: What made you decide to do Hardcore?
C: Cause I liked it.

MRR: Which band were you most influenced by at that time?
I: Chaos UK.
C: Discharge, "Hear Nothing".
I: Exploited, Chaos UK, Discharge; GBH etc

MRR: Did your music sound like those bands when you started the band?
I: I was shocked by BGK's single.
C: That was a good one. I was thinking there were no more good bands other than those early Hardcore bands. Then I listened to that BGK and was shocked.
I: Gang Green's single, Omnibus Take.

MRR: What was Death side's sound like before Chelsea joined?
I: It was bad. Death Side really happened when Chelsea joined the band. Uou joined next and then Muka-chin.
C: At that time you were playing with Systematic Death and we stole uou from them. We needed a drummer when we went play Hiroshima, so we asked Muka-chin. He was doing nothing after Chicken Bowels broke up.

MRR: What kind of music did you wanted to do? you wanted to do different kind of Hardcore, didn't you?
C: Progressive Hardcore (laugh). No, we didn't think anything. It was just enthusiasm and energy.

MRR: What were your lyrics like in those days?
C: Well, Asia came up with the basics and me and him wrote together. We didn't think so hard about lyrics at that time. It was just an emotional explosion.
I: We didn't know how to express ourselves in words. We were stupid street kids.

MRR: Why did you choose hardcore?
I: Hardcore in Japan is not just one particular type of sound. It's more like energy and spirit
C: Yeah, anyone who's doing a Hardcore band not only likes hardcore sound but also the lifestyle. We are living in japan and we do not know war or those big things. But we can find little contradictions everywhere around us in everyday life.

MRR: Was your fist album, wasted Dream, progressive? And the second, Bet On The Possibility is a progressive album in total. It was really new at that time.
C: We had a concept for our 2nd and we put a lot of our energy in it.

MRR: "Cry For The Truth" on the compilation Starving Dog Eats Master (Bloodsucker Records) had very acomplicated rhythms but I think the new The will Never Die, which will be released in US on Devour, is very simple and straight.
ะก: Catchy isn't it. But both of them have the same kind of speed.
I: We like to feel good with good speed.

MRR: You don't have slow and heavy songs.
I: Yes, we do have one. That's on the first album. Like 8 beat, for us slow is like that, and fast is like S.O.B.

MRR: How's your lyrics? Are they changing?
I: If I write the way I think, then it's going to be almost the same thing all the time. That's not fun. So I'm trying to expand my vocabulary. But then again, I cannot change the way I think. I only write about things that I persuade. Sometimes my message is to you and sometimes it to myself.

MRR: Your new single The Will Never Die is....
I: I still have strong impressions about my friend. Even though he died, if I really got strong impression, you would never forget that feeling.

MRR: Why did this EP come out from Devour?
C: They are our friends. When they asked us if we'd like to make a single, we simply said "Yes".

MRR: is Death Side trying to get out more from Japan?
C: Yes, more this year. In Japan, we can find releases from unknown American bands, but in the US, a few of them might only have a cassette copy of ours.....
I: Well, we don't have money and know how to approach other markets.... But we will try harder this year. If anyone asks us to come and play, we'll go anywhere in the world. We wanna do a world tour! rd like to play in China.
C: l don't want to go Palestine.
I: Wherever a real war is happening, I guess they don't have any strength left to understand Punk... But a country like china which is still an undeveloped county for music, we might be a frontier and make something happening. C: I really want to do a European tour, 'cause that's where many hardcore bands which made us to start playing came from. And I think we can surprise them.

MRR: What's the possibility of doing such tour?
C: Only if we can clear the money problem. We don't have to make money for ourselves, as long as we can pay our transportation and food. If we can manage that, we will go as long as possible. We also like to record outside of Japan. I think their sound engineers understand more about hardcore than Japanese engineers. But when we met ENT, they told us the recording on our 1st album was the greatest. The first album's recording quality is bad, but they think it's punk. We think ENT sound great, well, 1 guess people want something they do not have.

MRR: is there any band you got influenced by recently?
I: Most of them are Japanese bands. Like Tetsu-array, criick, Pile Driver, Bastard, etc. I've listened to conflict again recently.
C: Not new bands, but '80-63 Disorder for me.

MRR: What you think about bands that clone from Discharge?
I: I like Anti Cimex
C: Yeah, Anti Cimex, Avskum, Crude SS is cool.

MRR: Any American bands?
C: Agnostic Front's 1st album, Crucifix, Dead Kennedy's In Got We Trust, Plastic Surgery is good.
I: Yeah, I like Dead Kennedy too. Also, Multi Death Corporation by MDC is cool.

MRR: Any good bands In Japan?
C: We have the greatest hardcore scene in Japan. At least, I understand the message behind it and see the reality of it.

MRR: Do you like to stick with hardcore?
C: I like the sound of it. But just hardcore, not crustcore or grindcore.

MRR: How about Punk?
I: Yes. Punk is the most powerful rock of all. Most people do not think punk is rock. But I think hardcore punk is the real rock. It will not fade out and it's got the most energy.
C: You can get high just off the rhythm with hardcore punk. I want more people to realize how good you can feel with our rhythm.

MRR: what are your release plans?
I: A 7" from H.G. Fact.
C: Another 7" from Devour, then maybe an album.

MRR: Do you have any message to your fans outside of Japan?
I: We really hope to come to your town to play, so come see us someday!
